Sample Projects and Results
Here are examples of projects where PCS has helped companies realize their goals of improving the reliability, availability and manageability of their IT infrastructure containing an Unix or Linux operating system component.
Improved System Performance
Background: An aluminum casting plant using Unix servers required faster system performance to handle the addition of new users and new applications.
Solution: A new production environment was designed and implemented consisting of dual front SCO Unix systems. Redundant data storage was implemented on a separate storage LAN using two Linux systems as Network Access Storage Units. The customer benefits from increased performance so information can be obtained faster plus there is built in redundancy making it more fault resistant.
Secure Network
Background: A company with six plants across North America needed to improve their existing outdated modem based communications.
Solution: A secure network was implemented across the six manufacturing plants for up to 150 workstations in Unix and Windows 3.1/95/98/NT. The confidentiality of each plants' information resources was protected by designing and establishing a fully encrypted VPN (Virtual Private Network) network connection. Unauthorized access was protected using SOCKS V5, TCP wrappers and secure FTP server. These changes resulted in easier site support, faster email delivery and better information allowing management to make more timely decisions.
Custom Applications
Background:Data from laboratory equipment was being entered by hand into the business applications, making this process time consuming and highly prone to data entry errors.
Solution:Custom applications were developed to automatically capture data from various lab equipment, including Tensile and Spectrograph. This resulted in no data entry errors with automatic capture of data from lab equipment . With this increased traceability the customer could provide their clients with a higher comfort level of product quality.
Integrate Information
Background:A large retail Canadian clothing company needed to move data easily between unrelated programs developed from various vendors.
Solution: Custom software was written to reformat the data so it could easily be passed between the different vendor applications without staff intervention. Out sourcing this work provided development and support on an "as needed" basis eliminating the need to hire additional staff.
